They made contact with Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of USS Enterprise. During attempt to take the Enterprise to Andromeda, the Kelvans began to experience emotions. Kirk taught Kelinda about love, making Rojan extremely jealous. They eventually accepted an offer of aid for their people by the Federation, and colonized an uninhabited planet.
