Mr Cardwell was a building society manager who met with Kevin and Sally Webster in January 1988 to explain why the building society had refused them a mortgage on 13 Coronation Street. The Websters were hoping it was a mistake, but Mr Cardwell told them that he signed the letter himself. He informed them that their joint income was more than adequate, but that their head office had found out that in June 1985 Sally had had a County Court judgement made against her relating to an unpaid debt of £216.48, a fact that the Websters hadn't disclosed on their application form. Having forgotten about the debt, Sally was upset to have potentially scuppered their chances of buying No.13, but fortunately they were granted a mortgage from Weatherfield Building Society after paying the debt.
