John of Barsoom is based on Confederate general John C. Carter. John Carter is also the name of the main protagonist of Edgar Rice Burroughs's A Princess of Mars and of some of that book's sequels. In the books, Carter travels to the planet Mars and interacts with its native inhabitants, in whose language the planet is known as Barsoom. Incidentally, the fictional John Carter was also a Confederate veteran.
