Madame Dorothea's adoptive mother was a warlock—a "Control"—who used to run a Sanctuary in Brooklyn since as early as 1953. At one point, she adopted a mundane child, Dorothea, and raised her knowing the ways of the Shadow World to ensure that there would be someone to look after the Sanctuary and the Portal in their apartment in case she ever died.
