Toxoplasmosis is a serious disease transmitted by eating contaminated food or by contact with infected nasal discharge, saliva and faeces of carrier animals. Young cats are most susceptible. Symptoms include fever, loss of appetite, cough, jaundice, emaciation, laboured breathing and nervous system disturbances. Most infected cats develop a natural immunity. If transmitted to pregnant woman, toxoplasmosis can cause miscarriage or birth defects. For this reason, pregnant women should avoid cleaning litter trays, or at least wear protective gloves.
