Karl Maltzahn was elected to Parliament in August 3295. In 3310, he ran for the Liberal Party's presidential nomination. He came in fourth place and was eliminated on the second ballot after winning 19%. A year later, he ran for the leadership and was defeated by 0.4%. He was appointed to the cabinet as Minister of Science and Technology in November 3312. He served until January 3314. Following the resignation of Mic Hirschfelder, Maltzahn defeated Jim Foljambe in a bid to become interim leader.
