Dayu was a bushi who joined the Brotherhood of Shinsei in grief after his wife had died. He was sent to the Colonies and had risen as abbot on the strength of his management skills. In 1198 Dayu was convinced that the Writings of Fudo were heretical after a visit of the brother Rokku, and the abbot forbade the monks under his authority to study them. The followers of Fudoism and their leader, the nun Gemmei, were given permission to withdraw for a time, and departed to the Second City to continue their studies.
