Rattans are tropical palms from the forests of Southeast Asia. Because of their strength and flexibility, the stems of the rattan are used extensively in the manufacture of cane furniture. Being slightly weaker than a human bone, a club made from rattan can strike a person's arm, leg, rib or neck without breaking them. So a length of rattan makes an excellent sword for full contact foot jousting. But it still hurts like hell.
