The vessel is named after Joseph Kaeble, a winner of the Victoria Cross in the First World War. On February 10, 2011 the London Free Press reported that the CCGS Caporal Kaeble V.C., and her sister ship the CCGS Private Robertson V.C. will patrol the Great Lakes. According to the Halifax Shipping News the Caporal Kaeble was first "rolled out" in April 2012, to be painted, and again in June, to have her masts installed. They predicted she would be commissioned in October. The vessel was formally "unveiled" on November 13, 2012 at the Irving Shipyards in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she was built.
