Conker also helps David meet Sophie, who worked as a wildlife volunteer. Conker dies at the end of The Fire Within, due to kidney failure. The event of his burial under an oak tree also brings in the first mention of nature - that "what you take from the earth, you must give back". This message is further elaborated on in later books.
