Lord R.J. Croft, 9th Earl of Abbingdon, was the father of Richard and Errol Croft. Because of their shared initials, Richard avoided using his middle initial in monographs so as not to allow himself to be confused with his father. He died some years before Richard and was interred in the Croft family crypt, in a tomb hiding various secret chambers used by Richard.
