The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour was established in 2005, after the collapse of the Southern Modified Auto Racing Teams (SMART) organization as part of the breakup of the American Speed Association. Whelen Industries, who sponsors the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour agreed to sponsor the Southern Tour series, which became the Whelen Southern Modified Tour. The 2005 inaugural Whelen Southern Modified Tour Championship was won by Junior Miller.
