The Seattle Sounders is the name of three soccer teams that were based in Seattle, Washington since 1974. The first incarnation of the Sounders played from 1974 until 1983 in the NASL and never won a championship, although they lost to the New York Cosmos in 1977 and 1982. The second team named the Sounders played in the APSL for one season, 1994, before it was renamed to the A-League in 1995 and later the USL First Division between 2005 and 2008. The second Sounders won championships in 1995, 1996, 2005 and 2007, while finishing on top of regular season standings in 1994, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2007. The third and current Sounders, the Sounders FC, have been part of the MLS since 2009 and won the U.S. Open Cup in their inaugural year.
