January 26, 1856: The sloop Decatur ends a dispute with local indian tribes by firing its cannons. Leschi, chief of the Nisqually & Yakama Indians, lead 1,000 warriors in an attack on the town of Seattle. (Leschi later gets the well-manicured Leschi Park dedicated in his honor.) Nov 29-Dec3, 1999: The World Trade Organisation holds its annual meeting in the United States for the first time. 40,000 protesters show up, embarrassing local officials and drawing attention to inequities in the global economy.
