Obstructive Sleep Apnea is the most common sleep disorder, affecting approximately 20 million adults. Obstructive Sleep Apnea occurs when the windpipe that brings air into the body becomes blocked during sleep, which keeps the lungs from getting enough air. With each period of breathlessness the carbon dioxide level in the blood rises and there is a corresponding decrease in the blood oxygen levels. The reduction in oxygen and increase in carbon dioxide alert the brain to resume breathing and cause an arousal. Frequent arousals prevent the individual from getting enough deep sleep.
