The word kuchu (plural: kuchus) is a Ugandan Swahili slang term which is often loosely translated as "queer" and is used primarily by gays, lesbians and transgendered people in Uganda. The term was first documented by Sylvia Tamale in her 2003 paper "Out of the Closet: Unveiling Sexuality Discourses in Uganda"; in particular, those who identify as kuchus view bisexuals as "sell-outs", according to Tamale. A documentary film, The Kuchus of Uganda, was made by Swedish director Mathilda Piehl in 2008.
