In the late 2000s, Gōri began to be afflicted by blindness from retinal detachment induced by diabetes mellitus, leading him to suffer depression for his inability to read scripts clearly. His impairment led him to commit suicide in 2010 while in Tokyo by slitting his wrists with a knife, and his lifeless body was later found on Nakano Ward. He had written several letters addressed to his family containing the notes "Thank you" and "I'm sorry", which were recovered from his person by Tokyo authorities.
