Karl von Hapsburg was born in 1961 as the sixth child and the first son of Otto von Hapsburg, head of the exiled Austro-Hungarian imperial family of Hapsburg. When his father Otto was called to Austria to become Emperor Otto I of the Austrians, Karl became Crown prince. Karl had taken some of his, then 85 years old, father's symbolic functions after he produced a heir to the throne in 1997.
