Simply put, interval training is defined as short, high-intensity cardio alternated with longer periods of lower-intensity cardio. Examples of this include wind sprints and Fartleks. (See HIIT.) A common interval would be the 40/20, which is 40 seconds moderate intensity cardio followed by 20 seconds of sprinting.
