Paul Kilgariff was elected to Parliament in August 3267. After securing his fourth term in 3279, speculation began to mount that Kilgariff would be a good candidate for the leadership. After initially deciding against challenging Norm Carbines and instead supporting Eve Kuchera, Kilgariff launched a bid for the leadership. In what should have been an easy contest, Kilgariff only narrowly defeated Carbines. Most attribute this to the fact that Kilgariff was too undecided on whether or not he should actually run for the position.
