Osman V was Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and Caliph of Islam. He was born on 18 August 1912 in Constantinople, Ottoman Empire, the son of Mehmed Burhaneddin and Aliye Melek Nazliyar Hanim Efendi. He became Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and Caliph of Islam upon the death of Orhan II on 12 March 1994. He reigned until his death on 23 September 2009 in Constantinople, and was succeeded by Bayezid III.
