Mephistor was in a small Shanazar town when a quake hit the settlement, destroying buildings and opening rifts in the ground. Fortunately, Sonic the Hedgehog was in the area and used his speed to rescue endangered people. Watching his impressive abilities, Mephistor gained an idea when a citizen suggested that bottling Sonic's powers could earn someone a fortune. With this in mind, Mephistor attempted to befriend Sonic but the hedgehog was wise to the wily magician and warned him away. Mephistor threw away his act and cast a spell that instantly absorbed Sonic's powers and placed them in a small bottle. To compound Sonic's misery, Mephistor was able to easily dodge Sonic's slow attacks and even scrawny assistants were able to inflict a beating on the hedgehog.
