A transfer coil was a technological component of Constitution-class starships. In 2266, the USS Enterprise's transfer coil was damaged in battle with a Romulan Bird-of-Prey. While making repairs on the transfer coil, Commander Spock accidentally transmitted a signal, which alerted the Bird-of-Prey to the Enterprise's position. (TOS: "Balance of Terror" )
