John Powell (1912 - 1998) was a British Soldier and Politician. When the war began in 1939 he joined the British army, and served in the intelligence corps. Following the German invasion in 1940 he was interned in France. Despite uttering pro-Soviet opinions before the war, he soon saw that an Anglo-German alliance was the last chance for preserving what was left of the British Empire. In March 1941 he was released and returned to Britain to teach Greek at Cambridge. Whilst there he was spotted by an Abwehr operative, and recruited as an expert on British studies. He spent two years with the Abwehr, before transferring to the British Ministry of Propaganda, serving under William Joyce, it was at this point he joined the British Union of National Socialists.
