[Source] Hyperwave comlinks were an enhanced form of comlink used during the reign of the New Republic. When Luke Skywalker and Lando Calrissian piloted the Lady Luck with Luke's X-wing starfighter docked beneath and controlled by R2-D2, they set up a hyperwave comlink between R2 and C-3PO in case anything went wrong with a docking maneuver they needed to preform and the ship's normal communications system didn't work.
