Soundwave is a decepticon in g1 During the build up of the rebellion, Soundwave tasked himself with finding a suitable leader for the rebels. The only two options he had to begin with had possibly fatal flaws (Starscream was too unpredictable, Shockwave was to predicatble). When he heard of a breakout from an illegal gladiatorial ring he was hired to hunt down the escaped prisoners, Megatron and Reflector. When he failed to capture Megatron using some of his ost elaborate plans he decided that Megatron could be another possible leader After studying Megatrons behaviour he decided he was the leader he was looking for.
