Clinch wrestling featured a number of complex holds. As the Ossaki lacked heads and had four strong arms, grips and positioning were vital to maintaining control over enemies. In training, Ossaki usually fought to submission, achieved by incapacitating arm locks. Clinch wrestling also utilized a number of throws and takedown techniques, as well as extensive ground fighting. Maintaining balance was critical to success in a sparring match or a real fight. In life-and-death combat, Ossaki might finish fights by breaking arms or spines or gouging the eyes or nostrils of their enemies.
