The Forward Command Centre was a structure you must protect during the battle. Its key purpose was to coordinate troop movements, and to be controlled by a Jedi General. This means that it wasn't as effective if there were no jedi present. The Droids purpose was to destroy this structure. In the PS2 version you couldn't spawn more AT-TEs without it, but LAAT/i were still spawnable.
