Katihar is the district headquarters of Katihar District, one of the districts of the eastern Indian state of Bihar. The population of the district is 2,392,638. Out of the total population 2,174,361 live in villages. There are around 655,119 literate persons in the district. About 140,418 tribal people (scheduled tribes, called ST, that is, the certain specified tribes mentioned in one of the schedules of the Constitution of India) also live in the district.
