The idealism - materialism contradiction is a yet unsolved philosophical problem. The materialistic view states that "spirit" cannot be shown to exist as independent from the physical body, and therefor is illusionary. The idealistic view states, that "matter" is only perceived by the "spirit" and has no real existence outside of our awareness of it.
