The unnamed vicar was due to conduct the marriage service of Angela Hawthorne and Norris Cole in December 1995, and was frustrated by the late arrival of the groom. Best man Derek Wilton had deliberately taken Norris to the wrong church out of revenge, upon discovering that Norris had kidnapped his garden gnome Arthur and held him to ransom for months. Norris was terrified of inflaming the wrath of his bride-to-be Angela with his tardiness and begged Derek to get him to the right church. Derek eventually capitulated and delivered Norris to the venue, to be greeted by the relieved vicar, who revealed that Angela had been driving round and round for ages. As Angela's car pulled up, Norris headed inside to avoid his furious bride before the wedding.
