In early 2287, the Zephyr, while under the command of Captain Phil Burroughs, was commandeered by mercenaries led by Garth of Izar, who imitated Burroughs's appearance while identifying himself as "Zair." Izar renamed the ship the Renegade, fitting to its rogue status, and attacked a Klingon outpost without provocation. The USS Enterprise-A, under James T. Kirk, stopped the Zephyr, although Izar disappeared. It was later revealed Izar had killed the real Captain Burroughs two weeks earlier. He had become fixated on Kirk after having lost the prestige of his past career, despite having been cured of his earlier madness.
