JET stands for Japan Exchange and Teaching. The JET Program arranges for thousands of teachers to come to Japan to teach in local elementary, junior high, and high schools, usually as Assistant English Teachers (AETs). There are also positions called Co-ordinator for International Relations (CIR) and Sports Exchange Advisor (SEA). While there are many JETs in Ibaraki, the Tsukuba City Board of Education hires English teachers from the local community rather than through the JET Program.
