The Marquis of Pouzauges was a Brigadier General in the service of His Most Christian Majesty Louis XVII. He was commander of the royalist french forces in exile tasked with protecting the southern flank of the invasion at Quiberon. His troops, together with Earl of Edrington's half-battalion of the 43rd Foot, were transported by HMS Sophia and HMS Dumbarton, escorted by Pellew in HMS Indefatigable, to the shore SE of Quiberon, marching inland to the bridge at Muzillac. He expected the locals to rise to his cause, and when they were reluctant, he made much use of the guillotine he brought with him. He was killed when the Revolutionaries unexpectedly attacked from the north and overran the town.
