Artificial insemination is a fertility treatment where semen from a donor is inserted with a tube through the cervix into the uterus during ovulation. It is commonly used by unattached women using semen from a friend or a donor bank. However, it can also be used by couples where either the male suffers from poor sperm motility, or there might be barriers in the woman's reproductive system. Emma Sloan's child was conceived through artificial insemination. Lisa Cuddy did become pregnant through artificial insemination on two occasions, but both resulted in a miscarriage.
