The painting was seized by the Cardassians during the Occupation. Immediately following the Cardassian withdrawal, the Bajorans pressed the Cardassians to return it to Bajor, successfully doing so in 2373. Prior to the painting taking up a permanent home at the State Museum in Ilvia, Benjamin Sisko had City of B'hala brought to Deep Space 9, where he scanned it into the computer of the station. Sisko discovered that the illustration of the bantaca spire in the painting included the location markings on the unseen side of the spire in a reflection on a waterfall, allowing Sisko to pinpoint the location of the city.
