Former Governor of Arkansas, and two-time unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination (1992, 2000). He retired from active politics in 2000 and began a series of successful speaking engagements, heavily promoting his "Third Way" for the Democratic Party, which was widely considered to be "suicidally liberal" after defeats in 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004. His wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton ran for US Senator from Illinois in 2004, but was defeated in the Democrat primary.
