Award Books was the company responsible for seven novelizations of Planet of the Apes movies and TV series episodes during 1973 and 1974. The original movie was based on the novel La Planète des singes by French author Pierre Boulle, but while the movie was significantly different, it was not novelized. Beneath the Planet of the Apes was novelized in 1970 by Bantam Books.
