St. Sidwell was a girl who had inherited some land that her stepmother wanted. The stepmother hired two men to kill the girl as she prayed in the field. They cut off her head with scythes. A spring gushes forth from the place where her head fell. The well and a chapel were dedicated to her near the city of Exeter.
