Kurkutji and other aborigines were abducted by Monarch on his first visit to Earth and converted into androids. Kurkutji was promised that he would rule over Australia once the planet had been conquered. After Lin Futu convinced him that Monarch was lying in 1981, he helped the Fifth Doctor defeat him, and the androids decided to look for another planet on which to settle. As Tegan Jovanka — an Australian from the city of Brisbane — was able to speak with him in his native dialect, Kurkutji and his people may have come from tribes based in the Brisbane region.
