The 2003 Ford 400 was a Winston Cup Series (now Sprint Cup) event held at Homestead-Miami Speedway on November 16, 2003. It was the season finale and a race of more firsts and lasts. It was the first Cup race at the track on the new variable banking surface yet the final race under the "Winston Cup" name. Bill Elliott, in his final race in the #9 Dodge, dominated the event, leading 189 of the 267 laps in searching his second straight victory. However, Elliott's right rear tire gave without warning on the last lap. While Elliott's mangled machine limped home 8th, Bobby Labonte flew by and took the victory. It was Labonte's final victory to this point. Despite an engine failure that left Matt Kenseth dead last (43rd), Kenseth ended the year with a 90-point championship lead on Jimmie Johnson
