Garnik was a war hero of the Republic Military from the planet Ord Mantell well before the Cold War between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire. During the Cold War, the Republic named the spaceport on Avilatan, an island on Ord Mantell, Fort Garnik in Garnik's honor as they established a military garrison there.
