In the second branch of the Mabinogi mythology, Bendigeidfrân was a Welsh character who traveled to Ireland to rescue his sister, Branwen, from the clutches of her tyrannical and abusive spouse King Matholwch. Although Matholwch accepted a peace agreement between the involved parties, he secretly planned to murder Bendigeidfrân in the middle of the night by ambushing him with armed warriors hidden in hanging flour bags.
