Samuel Jones Tilden (February 9, 1814 - September 20, 1881) was the __th President of the United States (1881) and the __th Governor of New York (1875-1878), as well as a lawyer and author. Despite winning broad support as a centrist Nationalist in 1880, he was unable to implement his proposed national agenda when he was gunned down by assassins in New York on September 20, 1881, becoming the first President in US history to be assassinated. Due to the poor execution of the Alaskan War by his successor in the White House and the ensuing economic calamity in the 1890's, the death of Tilden is viewed by historians as a great, missed opportunity.
