He is not the father of the genre : for some have said so, but I am not sure for my part. Tolkien is a source of inspiration of fantasy authors, that is sure. But he never thought himself as the foundator of heroic fantasy. And he would surely be disappointed by those numerous books that are said to "equal" or "be like" his books. So grandfather would be more exact, but when you keep in mind these restrictions.
