The best-of-seven playoff involved the National League champion San Francisco Giants and the American League champion Kansas City Royals. The Royals have home field advantage for the series as a result of the American League's 5–3 victory in the All Star Game. The Royals swept a three game series with the Giants in Kansas City from August 8–10, winning 4–2, 5–0, and 7–4.
