Oh Ike & Tina Turner, the 60s/70s version of Whitney & Bobby… or actually the other way around. The husband/wife combo that rose to immense popularity on the R&B circuit during the late 60s, early 70s was a fierce live act fronted by Tina’s exuberant growl. Ike’s upbeat, rock & soul style of music was groundbreaking at the time, and the Ike & Tina Turner Revue became somewhat of a bridge between more white-followed acts like Janis Joplin and the mostly black audience of Otis Redding. Due to marital difficulties, mostly Ike’s thirst for drugs and power, the couple broke it off in the mid-70s and went their separate ways.
