The Democratic Republic claims Ernst Thälmann Island, a small overseas territory of the former German Democratic Republic off the coast of Cuba that was left unclaimed following the illegal annexation of all GDR lands by the Federal Republic of Germany in 1990, and the rightful territorial waters surrounding that island. Ernst Thälmann Island is a 15000x500 meter island in the Gulf of Cazones, its sole building is a bust of the island's namesake, unfortunately toppled by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.
