It also introduced the Doctor as having escaped from his galaxy in the year 5733 to start a new and better life in the past. It was eventually rejected as it lacked characterisation and would require too many special effects. It was replaced by An Unearthly Child. Nevertheless, the first episode of The Giants was largely retained as the so-called "pilot episode", which itself was reworked into the episode "An Unearthly Child".
