The Meagher's Grant Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1969, although informal firefighting efforts were in place before that date. A tank and basic equipment were kept at a local store, and community members would quickly place the tank on a vehicle and respond to fires. In 1996, it and the other fire departments of Halifax County were amalgamated to form the Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service.
